My good friend Barton Smith (@TheMagnusPI) asked me the other day if my Baseball trajectory calculator could be modified to do softball trajectories. Well, nothing could be easier since only two things need to be changed: the mass of the ball and its circumference (I also changed the distance of the pitcher’s plate and the bases). I assume, for simplicity, that the lift (CL) and drag (CD) coefficients are the same as for a baseball (using Alan Nathan’s prescription). Is that true? I don’t know, but I do not believe there should be significant differences if any. However, I must admit that I did not search the literature to confirm this, so if you know any pieces of science out there about this subject, please comment below and I will modify the code accordingly.
